Solar Decathlon is about creating small, highly efficient homes to educate the public about green energy and as a platform for testing new technology. My goal as the kitchen team leader was to implement a design that not only utilized durable and natural materials, but could showcase how livable a small space could be.
Our final concept utilizes as little space as possible, yet allows people in the kitchen to engage the rest of the living area. Part of our design included a flexible moveable module that could serve a variety of roles, from cook and prep to buffet table on the back patio. We conducted extensive user testing on this project, trying to determine the best workflows for a small kitchen space as well as how the average person perceives energy consumption and conservation.
