It was great to see this post about Napkin Labs today. Last year I consulted with founders Riley Gibson and Warren Ng on the right positioning and strategy that a new an online crowdsourced design firm could take. Clearly we knew from the get go that the current winner-take-all method was harmful to both the creative participants as well as the client. It’s very unlikely that excellent work will be generated consistently from the current crowdsourced model.

We developed a basic idea that an online community could slot right in between the traditional full service firm and the untouchable spec work model. It’s great to see some recognition for what I think is a fantastic opportunity for freelancers and students to participate in big projects and collaborate outside their normal spheres. In a later post, I think I’ll delve a little deeper into the initial ideas we developed that’s turning Napkin Labs into what it is a year later.

As a side note, I’ve been participating in the beta projects and I’m very happy with the quality of participants and the ideas being generated!

I’ve had this up for almost a month and didn’t realize that I didn’t have a “Resume” section, so that’s been added. I’ve also updated the contacts and photography pages, so now this is looking like a real website. I’m hoping to start up some personal projects that I can actually post on here. Our friends at Airbus wouldn’t appreciate me musing on my work here.

The last website design was decent, but I ended up finding it limiting. As of right now I have 3 different designs at once! This second go around with the wordpress blog software has been a lot more successful. I’ve tried to teach myself how do do all this PHP business while integrating it into a custom design. I think I’ve managed to design something that I can easily update.

As I mentioned before, I decided to change to a more widespread typeface in Helvetica Neue, which is default on OS X. In looking for inspiration I noticed that larger text sizes are much easier to read at the distance that people tend to be from a monitor. Also, large headlines are more exciting, everything is much more important sounding!

A Very Important Headline

My old website is still running with the exception of the front page, which ran into a wp-config.php issue and I don’t have the abilty to fix it. If you need to see the old pages they are here:

About Me
Design
Photography
Contact

More redesigned pages to come soon.
