Recently, I shot a roll of film while exploring the alleys around the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach. I’ve been making my way through Ansel Adams’ excellent manuals on photography. I bought a #8 yellow filter and used it in this series; it darkens the sky and increases contrast.

With this roll, I tried to explore maximum depth of field. Using a tripod, I was able to get a depth of field extending from about 5 feet to infinity in many of the shots. Overall, I’m happy with this series. In the future, I am going to be looking into trying to get a little less contrast in development. The bright sun was probably a factor this time. I guess now I have something to look forward to with June Gloom: diffused lighting!

After several days of the giant smoke cloud looming the distance, several of my friends and I decided to explore. The day we picked happened to be when the fire was at its largest and most uncontrolled. A large portion of the area south of the Angeles National Forest was under evacuation orders. Arriving my in my car, we found a small, very steep street that allowed us to get a bit closer to the fire than most of Altadena’s streets.

I took all of these shots via tripod, but mostly guessed with composition and exposure. We were trying to move fast. Part of me felt disrespectful of the residents facing the fire at their doorstep. However, I thought the resulting photos did a good job expressing the smokiness, confusion and danger of a forest fire rising 80ft into the air and moving at speeds much faster than people can run. More shots of the fire can be found here.

I’ve been inspired lately by the work of a Chicago photographer by the name of Scott Fortino. There isn’t much on the interwebs to show, but his medium format work shows bold colors and calm, yet strong compositions.
